Mandarina y Estampa
("Mandarin & Stamp")
2006
16" x 24"
Oil on Canvas

Sebastian Diaz’s oil paintings capture everyday objects in a hyper-realistic style. At times his work is pure still life and at others it is surreal. Oranges, orchids and Paraguayan pottery are common themes in Diaz’s work, and they give his paintings a distinctively Paraguayan touch. He creates still life paintings that have a unique sense of place. The pores on each orange, the fleshy texture of the orange once the peel is pulled away, and the delicate petals of the orchid sit on the canvas in photographic perfection.

Sebastian Diaz was born in Horqueta, Paraguay in 1964. In 2000, he studied at the Esquela Nacional Superior de Bellas Artes de Paris in Paris, France. He currently lives and paints in Asuncion, Paraguay.

Artist Statement:

"My childhood was spent in the country, where my passion for drawing conflicted with the pressure exerted on me by my parents to dedicate myself to my studies. Disobeying their admonitions, I would run off to hide and sketch everything in my surroundings: flowers, fruit, animals- the exuberances of my country’s nature. In my beginnings, colored pencils provided the means to imitate the hues found in nature, to which I have been faithful, respecting it in all its tones and forms.

Today, I paint with oil, but my respect for nature and faithfulness to color and form has not changed. I also have a profound admiration for the work of native craftsmen. My paintings, which incorporate folk elements that are threatening to die out, reflect my efforts to conserve my country’s ecological values and preserve on canvas all that relates to the earth— the source of all that is nature."

Price range: $3,800 - $9,500
