Bajando la Escalera
("-")
2001
14" x 8"
Mixed Media

Whimsical and kitsch, Irma Gorostiaga’s work combines collage and painting on paper to create, what she calls, "romantic fantasies". Gorostiaga layers photos, clippings from magazines and newspapers, fabric and pieces of mirrors on top of her painting to give each piece a unique sense of depth and texture. She guides the viewer through each surreal piece by playing with perspective — carefully placing objects and photos in curious relation to each other.

Stairs, dogs, celebrities and wedding elements (the dress, flowers and veil) are reoccurring objects in her work. Full of pomp and circumstance, her work celebrates the elegance associated with aristocratic Europe and the joys and hopes of transformational life moments such as marriage.

Gorostiaga lives in Asuncion, Paraguay. Her work is included in private collections in the United States, Germany, Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay.
