Artist Statement:

I’ve worked in photography for almost three decades. I started making photos by trying different techniques and themes in color and in black and white and toggling between documentary images and abstract experimentation. I have a hand in almost every part of the technical process (selecting and preparing the chemicals and paper, developing images in the laboratory, etc.) which has allowed me to always have control over the final result.

Currently, I’m working almost exclusively in documentary photography related to the history and the culture of my country (Paraguay) as well as those of other countries in the Americas whose human legacy is intimately linked to ours. For example, the Jesuit Missions of Paraguay, Bolivia, Argentina and Brazil are a common theme. I’ve published a couple books about them and have more ideas on the subject. I’m currently working on documentary photography of yerba mate and the yerba mate industry in Paraguay, which will be published in 2007.

My work attempts to be a mirror of the Paraguayan people, their lives, their customs and their colors. And in the end, it is about a magical legacy of many cultures that lived and still live together in this mystical region.
